According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, some cancer treatments can harm the heart. This condition is termed "cardiotoxicity. Cancer medicines can affect the pumping ability of the heart and lead to heart failure in severe cases.

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, stated that while there have been advances in cancer treatment, one of the most important side effects has been the risk of heart damage from the drugs.

In the study, the researchers from London identified proteins in the blood that were affected by cancer treatment drugs and were linked to an increased risk of developing heart disease. The researchers identified 33 proteins in the blood that are linked to the likelihood of developing multiple cardiac diseases, including heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Floriaan Schmidt, of the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science, noted that the proteins identified in the study can help increase the pace of developing new drugs by offering a blueprint for new treatments for both cancer and heart diseases.

He stated that the findings of the study can help in developing more confidence among the researchers as they will be sure about the consequences of the treatments they have created, such as decreasing tumors without causing any side effects.
